2 BELVOIR TERRACE
CAMBRIDGE
Belvoir Terrace is a handsome terrace of listed Grade 2, 5 storey Georgian townhouses located on Trumpington Rd opposite the Botanic Gardens in Cambridge. No.2 had been in the same ownership for many years, updated with minor extensions in the 1970/80’s but had become in need of refreshing everything from top to bottom.
The property retains many original features, well-proportioned rooms, tall ceilings and elegant sash windows. Snell David were engaged to explore ways in which the house could be sensitively updated and refurbished to suit a modern, young family.

The house benefits from a fabulous garden with access to a rear parking area so after exploring a few options, the decision to locate the family kitchen at garden level with a new ‘back’ door seemed the obvious solution. This allowed the upper ground floor to return to being a large double reception room and the master suite taking the first floor.

Once the layout was firmed up, Snell David worked very closely with the Planning and Conservation Team at Cambridge City Council to ensure the refurbishment respected all the original features and that the extension could be distinctly contemporary, yet appropriate and sensitive. The finished house is a testament as to how a thoroughly collaborative approach between the local authority, client and architect can result in a strong, powerful yet sensitive solution that suits modern day living.
