This project converts an existing 'Atcost' concrete framed agricultural storage barn to 3 residential dwellings. The barn was dis-used and in poor condition, set within the curtilage of a rural working turkey farm.

 

The rather beautiful and slender existing concrete frame is expressed between new red brick panels with a zinc barrel-vaulted roof sailing over the top of the existing apex frame.  The original concrete frame has been expressed to tell the story of the existing buildings past life.

 

This is a highly sustainable development, both in terms of building performance, use and local socioeconomic needs.  The farm is one of the largest employers in the area and this development is one of several small-scale projects in the pipeline to provide an additional incentive and comfort for future farm-workers to settle.  The Client was also keen to create a sustainable building, and as such has invested in ground source heat pump technologies.  This building successfully combines modern technologies with traditional building techniques to create a high quality, efficient and low-maintenance building, which sits naturally in its surroundings.
