Located on the southern edge of Cambridge, this property is a good example of a 1930’s interpretation of a detached suburban Arts and Crafts house. Although the house has been altered over the years, the original form of the house with its’ subtle details - such as creasing tiles over window heads and the arched front entrance, remain as distinctive and high-quality features.
The project involved the sensitive restoration and modernisation of the original house, the demolition of an existing lean-to garage and conservatory and the construction of a new rear kitchen extension. After much deliberation and consideration of various options, it was deemed that a contemporary style, flat roofed extension would be the most appropriate solution – enabling the proportions of the original house to be read alongside the new addition.
The original house has been uplifted; featuring replacement timber windows, restored lead dormers and a fresh coat of render whilst the contemporary brick extension stands in contrast to this. The design also features minimalist details and large glazed openings that flow out to the beautiful south facing garden. Our clients favoured the use of Crittall-style metal screens, doors and windows in the extension as a nod to the 1930’s heritage of the building. Internally, the metal screens provide regular visual structure around the open plan kitchen and sitting areas and provide framed views of both the garden and original house.
