DRURY LANE

MELBOURNE, CAMBRIDGESHIRE

Snell David were approached by their clients who had bought the property with a view to downsizing from their current house following retirement. They were attracted to the property as it had enormous potential and a large garden. It comprised a very small thatched cottage and a large single storey 1970’s rear extension.

Following a false start with an alternative firm, Snell David were appointed and  took the approach that more could be made of the contrast between the ‘quaint’ charm of the cottage and the rear extension. Although the cottage was not listed, both neighbouring properties were - so after careful negotiation with South Cambs District Council, the Conservation officer agreed that a contemporary, single storey approach would be the most appropriate and minimise the affect upon the adjacent listed cottages.

Two dormer windows were added overlooking the modern rear extension and the cottage was rethatched. The original side garage was incorporated into the new accommodation and the footprint of the original extension enlarged - all to create a fantastic large open plan space with two bedroom ‘wings’ opening up to the large garden.
