THE THATCHES

SOUTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE

The Thatches is a Grade 2 Listed, oak timber framed thatched cottage located in a quiet rural South Cambridgeshire village.  Our clients wanted to create a large Family Kitchen and Dining extension with a Garden Room and Loft Conversion that would provide exciting and functional spaces whilst remaining sensitive to the heritage assets and unique character of the existing cottage.

Our scheme was applauded by the Local Authority Conservation team for its ability to successfully incorporate a contemporary glazed extension providing both a contrast and enhancement to the existing listed property.

A key ‘enabling’ intervention was the insertion of a traditional garden wall which connected to the existing building.  This created a classic walled Kitchen garden at the front of the of the property whilst masking the flat roofed modern extension to the rear. Cedar shingles were used to soften the new building elements and they will weather beautifully to a silver tone to complement the existing thatched roof.  The elegant flat roof eaves are expressed in clean powder-coated aluminium cladding to create a striking framing of the enormous glazed sliding doors.

Internally the loft conversion within the thatched roof was sensitively created using lambs wall insulation, wood-fibre wall board and lime plaster, allowing the existing structures to breath naturally.
