The property was a recent purchase for a couple with young growing family and they wished to adapt their home for the family and to improve comfort and energy use. The existing house lacked insulation in most areas and had heating and plumbing requiring replacement. To the side an attached garage with asbestos roof provided an obvious area for change, along with the rear narrow kitchen.

Snell David explored a variety of different arrangements to offer greater space at ground floor with space to work from home, store bicycles and open plan kitchen dining space facing onto the garden. A combination of traditional and more modern architecture provided a striking and sleek appearance to the rear with large openings set into charred timber cladding , giving generous views of both sky and garden.

The gas boiler gave way to an air source heat pump to serve underfloor heating on all floors, supported by insulation upgrades across all areas.

The result is a quite dramatic full width transformation of the rear of the property, and also now a smart, practical and sustainable family home.
