THORLEY, HERTFORDSHIRE

Set in open farmland, this grade 2 listed C16 farmhouse, with adjoining barns, has been carefully restored, reorganised and extended creating a beautiful and functional family home that meets the requirements of 21st-century living whilst maintaining and embracing  the historical character and charm of the farmhouse.

A key part of the proposal was to reinstate the original main entrance to the front elevation, which together with the careful reorganisation of the internal layout (including a new central staircase - replacing an existing non-historic steep and somewhat convoluted stair arrangement), allowed the house to flow with a sequence of spaces which follow the characteristic historical linear form of the farmhouse. 

The extensions to the south continue the linear arrangement with the roof of each element stepping down to help create a subservient form.  To the east, the extension unifies the central section of the, much-altered existing elevation creating a boot room type entrance on the farmyard side of the farmhouse.  The south extensions have vaulted ceilings creating light airy spaces that house a new kitchen and a dining space with a fully glazed gable and corner sliding glazed doors that offer fantastic views to the landscaped gardens and over the swimming pool.  The gable glazing has a carefully detailed timber louvered screen which provides shading whilst allowing filtered natural light into the main kitchen and dining space.

The materials used (both internally and externally) are a carefully selected blend of natural materials that reflect and complement the vernacular materials of the heritage asset.
