THATCH COTTAGE HERITAGE EXTENSION
SOUTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE
This project involved extending a charming Grade II listed, thatched cottage in a beautiful South Cambridgeshire village. Our clients, a family of four with two dogs, needed more space for daily life, including additional living areas, a utility room, home office, and accommodation for visiting grandparents. With the heritage status of the property and the sensitive nature of the site, the challenge was to create a design that respected the cottage’s historic charm while meeting the family’s needs - and crucially, to secure support from the local Conservation Team.
As a Cambridge architect with experience in navigating listed building permissions, we approached the project with care and consideration, working closely with the Conservation Team to ensure the design responded thoughtfully to the historic context. The solution was a contemporary addition that contrasts, yet complements, the traditional cottage. By using blackened timber cladding and a natural slate roof, we were able to echo the materials of the existing property while introducing a modern aesthetic. A subtle zinc-clad link connects the new extension to the original building, allowing the extension to feel like a distinct but respectful addition.
Internally, the extension transforms the home with a light-filled, vaulted living space that feels spacious and welcoming. The mezzanine library adds a unique touch, offering the family a peaceful retreat. Practical solutions such as a side entrance and utility room integrate with the family's lifestyle, while the dining area in the link creates a smooth flow between the old and the new.
It’s been a pleasure to see the clients enjoy the balance of historic character and modern design in their home. Their appreciation of the natural light, practical layout, and the way the extension enhances their family life makes this project particularly rewarding.
